7TH J/AKHIR 1439AH
TOPIC:
SIGNIFICANCE OF BEING GRATITUDE TO ALLAH (SWT)
All praise is indeed
due to Allah (SWT), the Lord of mankind, jins and all that exist. Peace and
blessings be upon the leader of humanity, prophet Muhammad (SAW), His
household, His companions and those who followed his footsteps till the Day of
accountability.
To proceed; My Dear beloved brothers and sisters in Islam, today’s khutbah will
discuss the topic: Significance of being gratitude to Allah (SWT).
Indeed,
being thankful and showing gratitude to Allah [SWT] is the key to increase His
blessings on you and eliminate bad things in your life. Allah says:“ And
[remember] when your lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely
increase you[in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’ ”
Q:14:7
Allah
[SWT] has bestowed upon us His countless mercies and
blessings that cannot be
over emphasized and He says: If you should count the favor of Allah, you could
not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.
He also says: “Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in
the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His
favors.[both] apparent and unapparent But of the people is he who disputes
about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening book [for him].’
Some
of the blessings of Allah to you and I include:
1.
One of the greatest favors of Allah on thisummah is His guidance to the
straight path; as he selected us to
become muslim among the nations and
followers of the leader of humanity prophet Muhammad (SAW). This was clearly
stated in suratulma’aidah where Allah says [ ... This day I have perfected for your religion and
completed my favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion…].
2. Physical and mental fitness:The Messenger of
Allah [SAW] was reported to have said: “There are two blessings which many people
lose: (They are) Health and free time.”
Bukhari
3.
The five (5) sense organs: ie eyes in order
to see; ear for you to hear, tongue to
speak and teste things nose to breath and perceive and feelings to observe
something with little or nothing from our side: Allah (SWT) says “It is He who has produce you
and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you greatful”.
Q:67:23 and He says “Have We not made
for him two eyes?. And a tongue and two lips?. And have shown him the two
ways?] Q90:10
4. Next
are the blessings of property, life, and food security: these are very
essentials in any existing community. Thus Allah (SWT) reminded Quraish of
these great favors says: “For the accustomed security of the Quraish. Their
accustomed security [in] the caravan of winter and summer, let them worship the
lord of this House, who has fed them,[saving them] from hunger and made them
safe,[saving them] from fear.
5.
We would be asked on the favors given to us. Allah (SWT) says: Then you will
surely be asked that day about pleasure.
Factors assisting in thanking or expressing gratitude to Allah
(SWT)
1. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have
mercy on him) said: Gratitude may be in the heart, in submission and humility;
on the tongue, in praise and acknowledgement; and in the physical actions, by
means of obedience and submission to Allah (SWT). Madarij as-Saalikeen (2/246)
This simply means
gratitude most be in these three places.acknowledgement of the heart of all the
blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us, and upon others, and praising Allah for them; and using them to
obey the One Who bestowed the blessings and to worship Him.
2. Devil’s aims and objective
is to make us ungrateful to Allah (SWT):
After refusing to obey
Allah he said: "Then I will certainly come to them from before them and
from behind them, and from the right-hand side and from the left-hand side, and
You (Allah) shall not find most of them thankful." (Al-Araf 7:17).
3- The opposite of
Shukr (gratitude) is Kufr(minor disbelief):In many places in the Quran, Allah
compares the terms shukr and kufr.
"Then remember Me; I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do
not deny Me" a (Al-Baqarah 2:152).
4- Gratitude is a
purpose of our creation:"It is He Who brought you forth from the wombs of
your mothers when you knew nothing; and He gave you hearing and sight and
intelligence and affection: that you may give thanks (to Allah)"(An-Nahl,
16:78).
5- Shukr is a quality
of success in this life and in the Hereafter:
Ibn Abbas narrated that
the Prophet said: "There are four qualities; whoever is given them has
truly been given the best in this world and the next. They are: a grateful
heart (that is thankful to Allah), a remembering tongue (that mentions Allah
often), an enduring body (to persevere through the trials), and a faithful
wife."
6- Being grateful and
patient in times of difficulty:
Everything that happens
to us - even trials that we may consider to be personal afflictions or natural
disasters-are from Allah. Therefore, in times of calamity and distress, there
will be some good for us, provided we respond appropriately. The Prophet
said:"How wonderful is the case of a Believer! There is good for him in
whatever happens to him -and none, apart from him, enjoys this blessing. If he
receives some bounty, he is grateful to Allah and this bounty brings good to
him. if some adversity befalls him, he is patient, and this affliction, too,
brings good to him" (Muslim).
7- Failure to express
your gratitude to Allah leads to endless difficulties:
And He says: “and Allah
presents an example; a city which was safe and secure, its provision coming to
it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allah. So
Allah made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been
doing.”Q16:112 and people of saba’a[there was for [the tribe of] saba’ in their
dwelling place assign: two [field of] gardens on the right and on the left. [They
were told] eat from the provisions of your lord and be grateful to Him. A good
land [have you], and a forgiving lord. But they turn away [refusing, so we sent
upon the nmm the flood of the dam, and
We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with garden of bitter fruits,
tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.[By] that We repaid them because
they disbelieved. And do we [ thus]
repay except the ungrateful.”Q.34:15-17
May Allah forgive me
where I am wrong and guide us to the right path…Ameen.
Finally, We ask Allah
the most high, to continue to guide and protect our Iman. May He [SWT] assist
us and ease our tasks in this world and in the hereafter. O Allah grant us
peace in our hearts, peace in our homes,
peace in our working places and eliminate ungratefulness, and evils deeds in our country Nigeria. Ameen.
