The Secretary to the Government, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, issued a letter signed by the president on Monday May 12th asking the IG to hand over to his immediate subordinate, Suleiman Fakai, who is the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Finance and Administration. MD Abubakar became Inspector General of Police on January 25, 2012 and is due to retire July 30th 2014 based on mandatory retirement age after serving in the Nigerian Police Force for 35 years.
The outgoing IGP had applied for a tenure extension, which was turned down by the presidency.
“It is true the IGP applied to stay on. But we all knew long ago his wish wouldn’t be granted.
“First, they are other capable officers in the hierarchy of the Force so the president wouldn’t want to show preference or make it look like only Abubakar is qualified for the post.
“Second, the present state of security in Nigeria needs new strategy and course, so the president in veey much in order.
“There is no need to say embarrass him or say he was sacked because that is no even the case. Terminal leave vary from one to three months. Perhaps the IGP, wanted to leave next month when its a month to his official retirement date.
He also achieved a pass mark for improving on the image of the Force, while most of the officers caught in the act corruption or misuse o firearm/power were dismissed or demoted.
MD Abubakar, a widower who remarried last year to a beautiful lady will now have the fullest of time to enjoy his new wife.
