133RD FRIDAY SERMON DELIVERED AT
AREA 10 JUMA’AH MASJID ABUJA, BY YAHYA GARBA AL-YOLAWI ON 18th AUG.
2017/ 26st ZUL QA’ÁDAH 1438 AH
TOPIC: FIRST TEN ( 10) DAYS OF DHUL- HIJJA
All praises and thanks are due to
Allah,Who created time and made some times better than others; Some months, days and
nights better than others, where rewards are multiplied many times, as a mercy
to those who believed in Him [the Most High]. Peace and blessings
of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammad (SAW), His family, companions and those who
follow his guidance until the Day of accountability.
Respected brothers and sisters in
Islam; our last weeks’s discussion centered on Hajj and it rituals and today’s
sermon will focus on significance of
first 10 days of Dhul-Hijja.
‘O Muslims! the first 10 days of Zul-
hijja, are around the corner, days which Allah [SWT] selected and made it so
distinctive among the remaining
days of the year, they bring many benefits and blessings to a believer, such as
the opportunity to perform hajj, witness Arafat, give out sacrifice, repent, give charity, fasting, increase in
all kind of good deeds. The happiest person is the one who makes the most of
these special days and hours and get closer to Allah during these days through
various acts of worship and devotion to Allah [SWT].
A Muslim should make sure that he does not
miss any of these important days, because time is passing quickly. Let’s every
single one of us prepare himself by doing good deeds which will bring him
reward when he is most in need of it in the day of Qiyamah, for no matter how
much reward he earns, he will find it is less than he needs. The time of
departure is at hand, the journey is frightening, delusions and temptation are
widespread, and the road is long, but Allah is ever watchful and to Him we
shall return and render account.
Therefore, we most gain from
this precious opportunity offered by these invaluable and irreplaceable ten
days. Hasten to do good deeds, before death strikes, before one can regret
one’s negligence and failure to act, before one would be forced to return to a
place where no prayers will be answered, before death intervenes between the
hopeful one and the things he hopes for, before you are trapped with your deeds
in the grave. Allah [SWT] has given these days as blessings to this ummah; some
of the significance of these days includes:
THESE TEN DAYS WERE
BEEN MENTIONED IN THE QUR'AN:
Allah
[SWT] says: "By the dawn and by the ten nights …
" [Q89:1-2] IbnKathir said that "the ten nights" referred to here are the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. And
this opinion was held by Ibn Abbas, Ibnaz-Zubair, Mujahid and others scholars
tafsir.
The first 10 days of zul-hijja are
best days in the whole year:Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased
with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him) said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are
more beloved to Allah than these ten days." The people asked, "Not
even jihaad for the sake of Allah?" He said, "Not even jihaad for the
sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself
and his wealth up for the cause, and does not come back with anything."
(Bukhaari Hadith no 969).
The above
Hadith of the Prophet [S.A.W] spells
out the importance of these ten days in the sight of Allah [SAW] and the multiple rewards for all good
deeds during this blessed season. IbnTaymiyyah was asked concerning these days
and his answer was, “the last ten nights of Ramadan are better in terms of the
night and the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah are better in terms of the days.
Ibn al-Qayyim confirmed this and IbnKathir accepted this conclusion as well.
3.
DAY OF ARAFAT
Arafat is a
day of Forgiveness from sins, freedom from the Hell-Fire for the people who are
present in the plain of Arafat. Aa’ishah (ra) narrated the Messenger of Allah
(SAW) saying: “There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire
than the day of Arafat. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels
saying, ‘What do these people (pilgrims) want?'” [Muslim hadith no. 2402]
RECOMMENDED ACTS IN THESE DAYS
1. Prayer - It is highly recommended to
perform the obligatory acts at their prescribed times (as early as possible)
and to increase oneself in the sunnah
acts, for indeed, this is what brings a person closer to their Lord. The
Messenger of Allah [SAW]said:"Upon you is to increase in your prostration to Allah, for
verily you do not prostrate to Allah with even one prostration, except that He
raises you in degrees and decreases your sins because of it." [Muslim]. Moreover, He said in a hadith al-Qudsi “…and
the most beloved things with which my servant comes closer to Me, is through
what I have enjoined upon him. And My servant keeps on drawing nearer to me
through performing nawafil [praying or doing optional extra deeds beside what
is obligatory] until I love him. When I love him, I become the sense of hearing
with which he hears the sense of sight with which he sees, the hand with which
grips, and the leg on which he walks. And if he asks Me, I will give him and if
he ask my protection [refuge] I will protect him…”.[Bukhari]
2.
Fasting if possible all nine days and especially on the Day of Arafah for those
are not in Hajj
:
The Prophet [SAW] said: “Anyone who fasts for one day for Allah’s pleasure, Allah will keep
his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a distance covered by a journey of)
seventy years.” (Bukhari, Muslim). The Prophet [SAW] used to fast on the ninth day of
Dhul-Hijja and he said: “Fasting the
Day of ‘Arafah (ninth Dhul-Hijja) is an expiation for (all the sins of) the
previous year and expiation for (all the sins of) the coming year.” (Muslim)
3. Goodness to parent and others: Allah [SWT] says: “worship Allah and associate nothing with
him, and to parent do good and to relatives, orphans, the neighbor, the
neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom
your right hands possess. Indeed Allah does not like those who are
self-deluding and boastful”Q.4:37. He also says in another verse “indeed Allah orders
justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad
conduct and oppression, He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
4. Zikr [Remembrance of
Allah]: Allah [SWT] says:“Recite,
[O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer.
Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and verily the remembrance
of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do” [29:45]It is
from the Mercy of Allah that he enjoined upon us acts of worship that bring
peace and contentment to our hearts and that have an intrinsic enjoyment, as
Allah said in the Quran, “Those
who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah .
Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured”
[Q13:28]
5. Sacrifice:Sacrifice, for it is the ancient ritual of our
forefather Ibrahim and was ordered for our Prophet (SAW) when Allah said “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him
alone]” [108: 2]
The Prophet (Peace and
Salutations be upon him) said: “The son of Adam does not perform any actions on
the day of sacrifice which is more pleasing to Allah than the shedding of
blood. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of judgment with its horns,
hair, and hooves. The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches
the ground…” [Tirmithi, IbnMajah]
6. Recitation of the holy Quran:Recite the Quran for
it is the best form of Dhikr and the shortest route to draw closer to Allah.
Set yourself an inspirational target for these days as you did set yourself a
target for Ramadan and other things.
7. Charity:The Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him) said: "Every Muslim has to give in charity." The
people then asked "(But what) if someone has nothing to give, what should
he do?" The Prophet replied, "He should work with his hands and benefit
himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)." The people further
asked, "If he cannot find even that?" He replied, "He should
help the needy who appeal for help." Then the people asked "If he
cannot do (even) that?" The Prophet said finally: "Then he should
perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds, and that will be regarded as
charitable deeds." - Sahih Al-Bukhari,
Volume 2, Hadith 524
8. Increase in doing All forms of good deeds: Allah [SWT]says “So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it;
and whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it.“[Q99:7-8].
NB
Here,
I will like to call on our traders and general marketers to fear Allah and not
to increase or jack up the prices of cattle, rams, food stuff, transportation
etc, to the people as that increases hard ship to muslimsUmmah and removes
blessings from your business. Allah says: “Be merciful to those on the earth
and Allah will be merciful to you” Hadith
We ask Allah the most high, to accept our prayers,
scarifies and any form of goodness from
every single one of us; and may He protect and safe guide our pilgrims and
reward them and we that are here with jannatulfirdaus. Ameen
