YAHYA GARBA AL-YOLAWI ON  3TH ZUL HIJJA 1441/24th JULY 2020

In the name of Allah the Gracious the most Merciful
Respected brothers and sisters in Islam; our last week’s discussion centered on the significance of ten days of zul-Hijja and today’s sermon will focus on tips/advices for muslims in these ten (10)days and rules for blood sacrifice.
The act of slaughtering animal as Sacrifice (Udhiyah), is a sunnah; highly encourage practice that is performed on the 10th of  Zul-Hijjah  and the following three (3) days. It is an essential religious rite in memory of the sacrifice performed by Prophet Ibrahim [AS]. It involves the slaughtering of domestic animal (sheep, goat, cow or camel) and offering it as a sacrifice during these days of Sallah celebrations.

Udhiyah (slaughtering animal as sacrifice) is a practice commanded by Allah (SWT) ”Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only)." (Q108:2) and He also says: “Say (O Muhammad): Verily, my Salat (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists). He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims”[Q6:162]
The prophet [SAW] was asked "What is Udhiyya ?", He answered: "It is the sunnah of your father Ibrahim (AS), for every hair of the sacrifice  you will receive a reward from Allah and for every hair in the wool you will receive a reward". (Ibn Maja and Tirmidhi). He also said:  “the son Adam does not perform any deed on the Day of sacrifice (10th day of zul hijja) more beloved to Allah than shedding the blood [of sacrifice]. For verily it will come on the Day of Qiyama along with its horns; cloven hooves; and hairs; And verily the  (sacrificing) blood is accepted by Allah at its location prior to its falling on the ground; Therefore do your sacrifice with an open and happy heart" (ibn majah andTirmizi).

 Brief History of Udhiyah
The history of Udhiyah is traced back to the dream of prophet Ibrahim when he dreamt that Allah commanded him to sacrifice his only son, Prophet Ismail. He told his son the dream and Ismail entrusted himself to the Almighty and accepted to be sacrificed by his father. Due to their strong devotion and belief, Allah stopped prophet Ibrahim from slaying his beloved son, and sent a ram to be slaughtered instead of Ismail [AS].  Hence, this act of worship still exists till today with the will of Allah [SWT].
Significance of  Udhiyyah
Some of the wisdom of slaughtering animals as sacrifices on 10th day of zul – hijja which is the sallah celebration day includes:
1. Earning Allah’s Marcy, reward and closeness through the sacrifice.
2. It serves continuation of prophet Ibrahim (AS) tradition.
3. Making family happy on Eid celebrations days.
4. It brings smile to the face of poor and needy people in the Muslim  society.
5.  Giving thanks to Allah for witnessing and affording to sacrifice some thing for His sake.
6.  It promotes peace, love and tolerance in the muslim Ummah.
Advice for those intending to sacrifice:
1. Let the animal be in your possession, as you can’t sacrifice with the stolen animal.
2.  Halal means: this is very important as Allah (SWT) is pure and accept only which is clean and pure.
3.  Sincerity ( al-ikhlas) good intention is equally prerequisite to sacrifice as its meat or blood can’t reach Allah but the piety  in your  heart that reaches Him.
4.  Following the teaching of the prophet (SAW) in the process.
Who is eligible to perform the Udhiyah?
Some Muslim scholars stated that Udhiyah is an obligation (Wajib) on Muslims who are sane, mature, and have the means, which is above one's basic needs, however the majority of them classify it as a Sunnah mu’akadah (highly encouraged) .  A sheep is good enough as a sacrifice for one man and the members of his household and his children doe to hadith of Abu Ayyub: “At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), a man would sacrifice a sheep on behalf of himself and the members of his household, and they would eat from it and give some to others.” (Reported by Ibn Maajah and al-Tirmidhi,)
A camel or cow is enough for seven people, because of the report narrated by Jaabir (R.A) who said: “We sacrificed at al-Hudaybiyah with the Prophet (S.A.W), a camel for seven and a cow for seven.” According to one version: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded us to share camels and cattle, each seven men sharing one animal.”
Animals considered suitable for sacrifice.
The animal should have reached the required age, which is to be minimum of six months for a sheep, one year for a goat, two years for a cow and five years for a camel. It should be healthy and physically fit, free of any faults, because the Prophet (SAW) said: “There are four that will not do for sacrifice: a one-eyed animal whose defect is obvious, a sick animal whose sickness is obvious, a lame animal whose limp is obvious and an emaciated animal that has no marrow in its bones.” (Saheeh, Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 886).
There are minor defects that do not disqualify an animal, but it is makruh to sacrifice such animals, such as an animal with a horn or ear missing, or an animal with slits in its ears, etc. Udhiyah (slaughtering animal as sacrifice)  is an act of worship to Allah, and Allah is Good and accepts only that which is good. “Whoever honours the rites of Allah, this has to do with the piety (taqwa) of the heart”. suratul Hajj.
Acceptable time/days for sacrifice
Udhiyah must not be slaughtered before Eid (Salat Al-Eid). If it has been offered before it, it must be repeated. Thus, the time for Udhiyah starts after the prayer of the Eid (Salat Al-Eid) on 10th Zul-Hijja - 11th, 12th, until before sunset of 13th Zul-Hijja.
Way and manner to slaughter, distribute/share sacrifice meat
It is necessary to sharpen your knife, have your intention, face the Qibla and say Bismillahi Allahu Akbar Allahumma haza minka wa laka (In the name of Allah, Allah is  the Greatest, O Allah this from you and it is for you)while slaughtering the animal. If one does not know how to slaughter the animal , it is preferred to be present while someone else is sacrificing it.
How to distribute/share sacrifice meat: It is mustahaab (encouraged) to divide the meat into three: one third to be eaten, one third to be given as gifts and one third to be given in charity. This was the opinion of Ibn Mas’ood and Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). The scholars agreed that it is not permissible to sell anything from its meat, fat or skin.
in another version: “So a cow would be sacrificed on behalf of seven men and we would share it.”( Muslim).

Eating from ones sacrifice: It is mustahabb (preferable) for the one who has made a sacrifice not to eat anything else on that day before eating from it, if this is possible,“Let every man eat from his sacrifice.” ( Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5349). This eating should be after the Eid prayer and khutbah. This is the opinion of the scholars, including ‘Ali, Ibn ‘Abbaas, Maalik, al-Shaafa'i and others.
Those cannot afford are also covered insha Allah:
The prophet [SAW] has offered sacrifice for less opportune among his ummah.: Jaabir said: “I prayed on Eid al-Adhaa with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and when he finished (the prayer), he was brought two rams, and he sacrificed them. He said, ‘In the Name of Allah, Allah is Most Great. This is on behalf of myself and any member of my ummah who did not offer a sacrifice.” (Sunan Abi Dawood).

The first 10 days of zul-hijja are best days in the whole year: Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." The people asked, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah?" He said, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and does not come back with anything." (Bukhaari Hadith no 969).

The above Hadith of the Prophet [S.A.W] spells out the importance of these ten days in the sight of Allah [SAW] and the multiple rewards for all good deeds during this blessed season. Ibn Taymiyyah was asked concerning these days and his answer was, “the last ten nights of Ramadan are better in terms of the night and the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah are better in terms of the days. Ibn al-Qayyim confirmed this and Ibn Kathir accepted this conclusion as well.

RECOMMENDED ACTS IN THESE  10 DAYS
1. Prayer - It is highly recommended to perform the obligatory acts at their prescribed times (as early as possible) and to increase oneself in the sunnah  acts, for indeed, this is what brings a person closer to their Lord. The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said:"Upon you is to increase in your prostration to Allah, for verily you do not prostrate to Allah with even one prostration, except that He raises you in degrees and decreases your sins because of it." [Muslim].  Moreover, He said in a hadith al-Qudsi “…and the most beloved things with which my servant comes closer to Me, is through what I have enjoined upon him. And My servant keeps on drawing nearer to me through performing nawafil [praying or doing optional extra deeds beside what is obligatory] until I love him. When I love him, I become the sense of hearing with which he hears the sense of sight with which he sees, the hand with which grips, and the leg on which he walks. And if he asks Me, I will give him and if he ask my protection [refuge] I will protect him…”.[Bukhari]

2. Fasting if possible all nine days and especially on the Day of Arafah for those are not in Hajj :
The Prophet [SAW] said: “Anyone who fasts for one day for Allah’s pleasure, Allah will keep his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a distance covered by a journey of) seventy years.” (Bukhari, Muslim). The Prophet [SAW] used to fast on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijja and he said: “Fasting the Day of ‘Arafah (ninth Dhul-Hijja) is an expiation for (all the sins of) the previous year and expiation for (all the sins of) the coming year.” (Muslim)

3. Goodness to parent and others: Allah [SWT] says:  “worship Allah and associate nothing with him, and to parent do good and to relatives, orphans, the neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful”Q.4:37. He also says in another verse “indeed Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression, He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
4. Zikr [Remembrance of Allah]: Allah [SWT] says:“Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and verily the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do” [29:45] It is from the Mercy of Allah that he enjoined upon us acts of worship that bring peace and contentment to our hearts and that have an intrinsic enjoyment, as Allah said in the Quran, “Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured” [Q13:28]
5. Sacrifice: Sacrifice, (Udhiya or Qurban) for it is the earliest ritual of our forefather Ibrahim and was ordered for our Prophet (SAW) when Allah said “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]” [108: 2]
The Prophet (SAW) said: “The son of Adam does not perform any actions on the day of sacrifice which is more pleasing to Allah than the shedding of blood. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves. The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground…” [Tirmithi, Ibn Majah]
6. Recitation of the holy Quran:Recite the Quran for it is the best form of Dhikr and the shortest route to draw closer to Allah. Set yourself an inspirational target for these days as you did set yourself a target for Ramadan and other things.

7. Charity: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Every Muslim has to give in charity." The people then asked "(But what) if someone has nothing to give, what should he do?" The Prophet replied, "He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)." The people further asked, "If he cannot find even that?" He replied, "He should help the needy who appeal for help." Then the people asked "If he cannot do (even) that?" The Prophet said finally: "Then he should perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds, and that will be regarded as charitable deeds." - Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadith 524

7. Increase in doing All forms of good deeds: Allah [SWT]says “So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it; and whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it.“[Q99:7-8].
