TOPIC:  SIGNIFICANCE OF TAQWA (GOD CONSCIOUSNESS) IN ISLAM

All praise is indeed due to Allah (SWT), the Lord of humankind, Jinns and all that exist. Peace and blessings be upon the leader of humanity, Prophet Muhammad (SAW), His household, His companions and those who followed his footsteps till the Day of accountability.
Respected brothers and sisters in Islam, today’s Simon centered on : Significance of Taqwa (God consciousness) in Islam.

The term Taqwa was derived from the Arabic root word wiqaayah, (meaning shield) and its verb is from the word “Ittaqaa, yattaqee”; which means to be careful, to protect, or to be conscious of something. Taqwa simply means protection and shield from what is harmful. In Islam, taqwa means that a person should have a protection and shield between him and the anger or punishment of Allah (SWT). The protection can be established through sound Iman and good deeds; which in return will cause great love and fear of Allah that will lead to doing righteous actions and avoiding the evil ones.

Ibn kathir in his book of tafsir  said: the root meaning of taqwa is to avoid what one dislikes. It was reported that Umar bin Khattab asked Ubay ibn Ka’ab about Taqwa; Ubay said, "Have you ever walked on a path that has thorns on it?" Umar said, "Yes." Ubay asked, "What did you do then?" to which Umar replied, "I rolled up my cloth and struggled." Ubay said, "That is taqwa, to protect oneself from sin through life’s dangerous journey so that one can successfully complete the journey unscathed by sin.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah stated that, Taqwa “includes doing everything that Allah has enjoined whether it is waajib (obligatory) or mustahab (recommended), and avoiding all that He has forbidden, whether it is haraam (forbidden) or makrooh (disliked).”  Some of the verses and ahaadith on s ignificance of taqwa includes:
1. Allah (SWT) accepts only from those who have (Taqwa) God fearing in their hearts: Allah (SWT) says “And recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], “I will surely kill you”. Said [the former], indeed, Allah only accept from the righteous [who fear Him] Q: 5:27 and He also says: “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is [Taqwaa] piety from you …”Q22:38
2. Muslims were instructed to fear Allah any time any where: Allah (SWT) says: “ … and We have  instructed those who were given the scripture before you and your selves to  fear Allah but if you disbelieve- then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. It has been reported from the prophet (SAW) said: “Have Taqwaa (fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people.” imam tirmizi
3. The prophet (SAW) reads verses of Taqwa in most of his sermons to remind the ummah: “O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as muslims [in submission to Him]. Q3:102  “O mankind, fear your lord, who created you from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women and fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you an observer”.Q4:1 And he says: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and his messenger has certainly attained a great attainment”.Q33:70
4. Best provision one can get in this world is taqwa: Allah (SWT) says: “… And whatever good you do – Allah knows it; and take provision, but indeed, the best provision is [taqwa] fear of Allah ; and fear Me, o you [people] of understanding”.Q2:197
5. One of the secret of success in this life is having  Taqwa [ God consciousness]: Allah (SWT) says: “ … and whoever fear Allah- He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah- then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent” Q65:3
6 To be honored and respectful in the sight of Allah you most have [Taqwa] God fearing: “ O mankind, indeed we have created you from male and female  and made you  peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous [God fearing] of you. Indeed, Allah is knowing and acquainted”.Q49:13
7. Excelling the bridge of “siraat” in the day of Qiyamah: Allah SWT Says: “so by your lord, we will surely gather them and the devils; then we will present them before the Hell upon their knees. Then we will surely extract from every sect; those of them who were worst against the most merciful in insolence. Then, surely, it is We, who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein. And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord inevitability decreed. Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, (Hell) on their knees.” Q19:68-72
8. Fear Allah and He will grant you knowledge and wisdom: Allah SWT says:.. and fear Allah . and Allah teaches you. And Allah is knowing of all things.Q:2:282
9. Good and righteous family are for  those fear Allah (SWT):  Allah SWT says “ and those who say, “ our lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes. and make us an example for the righteous people [who have taqwa]; those will be awarded the chamber for what they patiently endured, and they will be received therein with greetings and [ word of ] peace.”Q25:74
10 Gates of paradise are open for those who have feared Allah (swt) in this world: “…those who feared their lord will be driven to paradise in groups. Until when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say; “Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it  to abide eternally  therein;” [they will enter ]. And they will say, “praise to Allah, who has fulfilled for us His promise and made us inherit the earth [so] we may settle in paradise wherever we will. And excellent is the reward of [righteous] workers”.

We ask Allah the most high, to accept our ibadaat and grant us taqwa at any given time or place.  Ameen
